A 15-bed private hospital and poultry farm operating on a same building in front of local police office at Gournadi municipal town of Barisal district endangering lives of patients and environment.

Local journalists after visiting ‘Alhaj Dr. Mustafizur Rahman Diabetic Hospital’ in front of assistant police superintendent office at Char Gadhatali near launch ghat area on Palardi River bank of Gournadi municipal town found that Dr. Mustafizur Rahman opened a private hospital on his four storied building.

Dr. Mustafizur Rahman was medical officer of Ujirpur upazila health complex and often absent in his working place for private practice in public hospital.

Dr. Mustafiz residing on the first floor of his hospital building. On ground floor there was his practice chamber, dispensary, drug store and pathological lab.

On second floor of the building there were seats and rooms for the admitted patients, operation theatre and post-operative room. However on the third floor there was a poultry farm business since last about two-years.

Although the hospital named as diabetic hospital under Gournadi Diabetic Samilty, but Dr. Mustafiz was not a diabetic specialist. He does different surgical operations like caesarean delivery, appendicitis and others without appointing any surgeon, anesthetist in his hospital.

The hospital building was polluted with the bad smell and waste of poultry farm and health, sanitation, sewerage, air-flow system was totally substandard with a 15-bed hospital premise.

During the visit Dr. Mustafiz was not available in his hospital, but his son Arafat Rahman acknowledged that his father was the only doctor of the 15-bed hospital and surgeons and anesthetist doctors from other places called to done operations here.

In the hospital one technician and two nurses also found and one woman named Jui, 20, said she serving here as a receptionist and nurse without any nursing training or education.

This condition endangering lives of surgical patients, especially pregnant mother and their neonatal babies, said Asaduzzaman Ripon, president Gournadi Press Club.

Students and teachers of nearby madrasa and local residents alleged that they use the Palardi River for bathing and washing cloths. But due to disposal of poultry and hospital wastes in the river they become sick with skin and other diseases.

Dr. Mustafifiz claimed he operating the hospital following the rules and regulations of the government.

He claimed three of his family members are doctors and before opening the hospital there was poultry farm and it would be closed permanently soon.

Sukumar Biswas, director Barisal divisional environment office and Dr. ATM Mizanur Rahman, district civil surgeon, said opening both the hospital and poultry farm on the same building by a doctor, was beyond imagination.

We sure that it was running without clearance and approvals of the authority and legal step against these businesses would be taken soon.
