Police-RAB denied involvement

Major Zia injured and death of 4 dacoits claimed

Barisal :: Major (rtd.) Ziauddin Ahmed, renowned freedom fighter and sub sector commander of sector-9 of liberation war and chairman Dubla Fishermen Group, has been injured in a gunfight with the forest dacoit gang in Sundarban coastal area Friday noon.

Death of four dacoit gang members also be claimed by unofficial sources, but Police and RAB-8 denied any involvement with the incident.

A team of Coast Guard trying to reach Dublar Char to rescue severely injured Major Ziauddin.

Kamaluddin Ahmed, younger brother of Major Ziauddin and secretary of the Dubla Fishermen Group, said Major Ziauddin left Mongla Port for Dublar Char on a cargo vessel at about 11:00 am.

When they reached near Char Putia of Pashur River estuary under Mongla PS at about 12:10 pm noon, then the members of forest dacoit gang Mortuza Bahini boarding on a speedy trawler opened fire on the cargo vessel.

Major Ziauddin received bullet injury on head with heavy bleeding and he and his associates also counter attacked the forest dacoit gang.

At least four forest dacoits killed in the gunfight, Kamaluddin claimed.

After half an hour gunfight, forest dacoit gang forced to retreat and injured Major Ziauddin taken to Dublar Char by speed boat, said Shahanur Rahman Shamim, business partner and nephew of Major Ziauddin.

After contacting with Dhaka Square Hospital authourity, a helicopter was sent to Dublar Char for taking Major Ziauddin to Dhaka, but the chopper failed to land due to fog and rough weather, Shamim said from Mongla.

Now we trying to rescue Major Ziauudin from Dublar Char with the help of Coast Guard, Shamim added.

Monir Ul Alam Gias, officer in charge of Mongla police station, said they heard about the incident. However we yet not confirmed about any death or injury as none filed any allegation and the area was very remote and mobile phone network almost unavailable

In the meantime a team of Coast Guard left Mongla towards Dublar Char to rescue Major Ziauddin, added the OC Mongla PS and confirmed Lt.Col. Jahangir of Barisal Coast Guard.

Major Sabbir, control room duty officer of RAB-8 headquarter at Barisal, said RAB also heard about the incident and trying to contact their official sources to confirm the facts.
