Nomination papers of two candidates from AL and BNF remained valid as final list of candidature in by-election for Barisal-5 constituency published on Wednesday after last date of withdrawal passed.

Begum Jebunnessa Afroj, widow of late city AL president and lawmaker Shawkat Hossain Hiron as AL nominated and Saiful Islam Liton, as BNF nominated now remained as candidates for the by-election scheduled to be held on June 12.

Mir Md. Shahjahan, Barisal regional election officer and returning officer of the by-election confirming the report said the candidates could start their election propagation from Thursday after getting election symbols.

Three aspirant candidates including Begum Jebunnessa Afroj, widow of late city AL president and lawmaker Shawkat Hossain Hiron and AL nominated candidate, Syed M Moazzem Hussain, director Pubali Bank and chairman Delta Life Insurance as independent candidate and Saiful Islam Liton, BNF nominated candidate, submitted nomination papers before the returning officer on May 11.

In the scrutiny nomination paper of Syed Moazzem was cancelled on May 14 due to irregularities in signatures and identifications in the list of one-percent voters submitted in support of him for contesting as an independent candidate in the national assembly election and his appeal was not also granted by EC on Tuesday, the returning officer told.

Inclusion of names and signature of the dead voters and dissimilation of number of voters and names, caused cancellation of the nomination paper of independent candidate Syed Moazzem, the returning officer explained.

Barisal-5 constituency with 3,42,228 voters was vacated after the death of AL lawmaker Shawkat Hossain Hiron on April 9 and Election Commission declared schedule for by-election on April 29.

Ruling Awami League Parliamentary Board (ALPB) holding a meeting with Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair, at her official residence in Ganabhaban at Dhaka finalised their candidate for the by-election through interviews of aspirants and nominated Jebunessa Afroj, wife of late lawmaker Shawkat Hossain Heron, for by-election in the Barisal5 constituency on May 8.

Mojibor Rahman Sarwar, central organizing secretary and city president of BNP, said the alliance led by BNP decided not to participate in the by-election as EC performing duties as stooges of ruling AL-led illegal autocratic government and failed to play neutral role and create level playing field.
