Devastating fire burnt properties worth Tk 10 million in Jhalakathi

iws0pfy7A devastating fire burnt 12 residential and business units at Tulapatty area in Jhalakathi district town on early Sunday damaging properties worth Tk 10 million.

The fully gutted properties included different types of bedding, quilt, and godown of waste items, spice crushing mill, shops of shoe, stationary, grocery and confectionary items and residential units.

Sohel Hossain, one of the affected businessmen, said they saw smoke and flame from the Talkdar Bedding Store at first and it rapidly spread to adjacent areas.

Properties worth Tk. 1 core has been damaged in the incident, he added.

Abdul Aziz, station officer Jhalakathi Fire Service and Civil Defense, said primarily it was assumed that the fire instigated from electric short circuit at a bedding store with inflammable items at about 12:30 AM Sunday.

Fire Service units from Jhalakathi and Barisal stations rushed to the spot and controlled the flame about 3:00 AM, he added.

Shakhawat Hossain, deputy commissioner, Majid Ali, district police superintendent, Afjal Hossain, municipal Mayor, Israt Jahan Sonali, Sadar upazila vice chairman, Shilmoni Chakma, Sadar police station officer in charge of Jhalakathi, visited the spot on Sunday.

They assured the affected people to help in rehabilitation process.
