Taxpayers called to ensure hassle-free service

zd0ntz8bThe seven-day ‘ fifth income-tax fair-2014′ organized by National Board of Revenue (NBR) ended in Barisal divisional city on Monday night with collecting Tk.84.09 lakhs as taxes, about twenty percent more than the collection of Tk. 68.12 lakhs in the fair of 2013.

The fair started on September 16 and ended on Monday night at Barisal Ashiwini Kumar Hall premises with a slogan of ‘Aykorey prabriddhi, desh o daasher samriddhi’ (Growth in income tax : Prosperity of the country and people ) for extending services by tax department to earn confidence and credibility from the tax payers.

A cultural function was arranged on occasion of the ending of the fair attended by tax payers and officials and performed by local artists.

Only one percent of the total population of the country pays income tax. Annually direct or indirect taxes contribute about only 40 percent in total revenue income. Many income-tax payable people do not pay tax. So the National Board of Revenue (NBR) has hosted the national tax fair since 2008 to motivate people to pay income tax, said Proshanta Kumar Roy, commissioner of taxes Barisal region, explaining the cause for arranging the fair .

During the fair, more than fifty thousand people visited services like issuing tax identification number (TIN) for the new taxpayers, income-tax return, application form for TIN, bank booths, help desk, information centre, legal advice on income tax and tax calculator software through 14 booths of the fair.

In the seven-day fair 242 new tax-payers received TIN, 218 registered for e-TIN, 5,262 get services , 3,501 submitted their income-tax return and Tk. 84,09,298 collected as taxes under 10 circles, said Swapan Kumar Roy, additional commissioner of taxes Barisal region.

About rampant allegations that a section of unscrupulous tax officials harass regular taxpayers in different phases, Abdur Razzak, deputy commissioner of taxes Barisal regional tax office, said we trying to introduce digitalisation of income-tax system to create public confidence in the tax process by ensuring honest, efficient, transparent and accountable service. Under the degitalised e-taxation system, one could pay income-tax through online process.

“Now-a-days, TIN certificate is essential for performing many tasks, especially for the banking purposes,” Moin Khan, another man filling form to become a taxpayer, said.

Yusuf Ali, a petty businessman of the city, told this correspondent that he has paid Tk 3,000 as minimum income tax for the first time to get benefit in business-loan.

Whether they would continue to pay tax regularly in future, the visitors of the fair, they said it depends on the initiatives of the NBR to remain the system hassle-free after the fair.
