Human chain, agitation procession

dbtp1oxpRight activists on Thursday morning organized human chain, agitation procession and handed over memorandum in Barisal protesting torturing teenage Ripa Aktar by boyfriend and his family members on Monday night to Tuesday morning by chaining in front of their home.

The victim was sent to shelter home after recording judicial statement of the victim on Thursday noon.

The protest programmes were organised 48-hour after the recovery of the victim by police with the help of local councilor to face criticises from the mass people and media against activities of right activists and NGOs for their failure to show prompt action to save the victim.

Barisal Sammilito Nari Nirjatan Protirodh Committee (Alliance for preventing torture against women in Barisal) organised the programmes in front of Ashwini Kumar Hall in the city.

Rabeya Khatun, district president Mohila Parishad and BSNNPC, presided over the programme addressed by Nigar Sultana Hanufa, Fazilatunneasa Farid, Anowar Zahid, Protima Sarkar, Dr. Syed Habibur Rahman, Prof, M Moazzem Hussain, Jiban Krishna Dey, Shuvangkar Chakraborty, right activists.

They demanded immediate arrest of the all repressors against Ripa Aktar, the 18-year-old girl, who was rescued by police and local ward councilor in Rupatali area und ward-24 of Barisal city on Tuesday morning.

Ripa was being chained up and beaten for around 11 hours under the open sky overnight allegedly by her boyfriend Shahadat Hossain Mithu, 20, and his parents and associates who were pressing her to withdraw cases filed against Mithu, the speakers narrating the incident told.

Participants of the programmes after the human chain went to the office of the deputy commissioner with agitation procession and handing over a memorandum demanded immediate arrest, speedy trial and exemplary punishment of the accused to make the region free from torture against women.

Nigar Sultana Hanufa, a women rights activist, clarifying their delay to react in this matter, claimed that they were not informed about the incident till media reflected that and organisations need meeting to discuss about holding protest programmes.

On other hand Ripa Aktar, the victim and complainant of the cases against her torturer boyfriend Mithu and others , was placed before the Barisal metropolitan magistrate court on Thursday morning.

There Papiya Sultana, magistrate of the court, recorded statement of the victim till noon.

Then Ripa Aktar was sent to shelter home of women’s assistance programme at Kashipur area of the city for giving her safety and security, providing treatment and counseling against physical and mental wounds.

Shakhawat Hossain, officer-in-charge of Kotwali police station, said Hosneara, mother of Mithu was sent to jail on Wednesday and police trying to arrest Shahadat Hossain Mithu, torturer boyfriend, Altaf Hossian alias Shanu Hawlader, father of Mithu, Shamsu Khan and Rafiq Akand, associates of Mithu, as accused in the case lodged by the victim.
