Idols of Durga Puja Temple damaged in the city

clo5dqqfUnidentified miscreants on Saturday damaged idols in a Durga Puja temple of Hindu community at Kawmia area of Barisal divisional city.

Bikash Haldar, secretary of Aparajita Kunja Durga Puja Mandir, said electricians of the Mandir when went at the temple on Saturday afternoon for decoration of the temple, found that hands of the idols of Durga and Ganesh and head of Kartik were damaged and broken.

It would be repaired soon by the idol-sculptors and they informed local ward councilor and police about the incident, the secretary of the temple committee told.

Murtaza Abedin, local ward councilor, said he with locals and police officials visited the spot at afternoon after informed.

Zillur Rahman, deputy commissioner Barisal Metropolitan Police, said he visited the spot and police already started investigation about the incident and liable would be arrested and punished.

Barisal Metropolitan Police authority said they strengthened safety and security measures in the area and will arrange inter-community solidarity talks.

Preparations for a five-day celebration of ‘Sharodiya Durga Utsab’, the main religious festival of the Bangalee Hindu community, are going on in full swing in the city and other parts of the region, said Rakhal Chandra Dey, district puja udjapon parishad president.

The festival will start on September 30 at more than 558 puja-mandops (alter) of the district including 35 in Barisal city.

It will conclude with immersion of the idols and images of the deities in different rivers and canals amid exchanging greetings of ‘Bijoya Dashami’ on early October 4, a government holiday very close to Eid Ul Azha festival of Muslim Community this year, Rakhal Chandra added.

The Barisal district and city Puja Udjapon Parishad sources said the number of Durga Puja mandops in Barisal city and district were 426 in 2008, while 355 in 2009 and 362 in 2010, and 445 in 2011, 547 in 2012, 550 in 2013.

Shohidul Alam, deputy commissioner Barisal, said administration will allot special financial grants for puja mandops while special security, undisrupted electricity and water supply, traffic control arrangements would be made for the convenience of worshipers and visitors during the festival.
