Six day long waterbird ringing camp in coast area

A 6 day long waterbird ringing and color flagging camp at Char shajalal in Bhola started from 27 Feb. This camp is being organised by NACOM & Bbc and supported the Bangladesh Forest Department & AWCF. It will help to understand on the way to migrated waterbirds. The camp was end on March 4.

Wildlife biologist and bird ringer Samiul Mohsanin led this camp. The other members of this team are british Trust for Ornithology ringers William Michael Jones and Stephen Samworth, A member of Bangladesh Bird Club (Bbc) and First Bangladeshi Everest conqueror M A Mohit.

End of the camp, Wednesday afternoon the lead researcher of the project Samiul Mohsanin said, during the camp total of 62 birds of 15 species have been ringed and color flagged by the research team. The species ringed are Small Pratincole, Lesser Sandplover, Temmink’s Stint, Little Stint, Curlew Sandpiper, and Common Redshank.

During winter migration birds follow flyways. Both East Asian Australasian and Central Asian flyways overlaps Bangladesh. “This would be interesting to understand the waterbird migration from Bangladesh” he added.

Samiul Mohsanin said, ‘The color flagging code for Bangladesh is yellow over yellow which is decided by the East Asian Australasian Flyway Partnership (EAAFP) Committee. The color codes are different combinations for different countries so that the bird with color flags spotted in the field can be readily identified which country it is from. Sightings reports from the different countries on each bird helps to gather valuable information on bird migration.

The Globally Threatened Waterbird Conservation in the Coastal Areas of Bangladesh project also doing awareness program to raise the awareness and reduce the hunting pressure in the community. Through Children awareness program the team is trying to raise the importance of birds in the environment. The team will also keep continue this research in Nijhum Dwip and Bhola adjacent delta islands, says Samiul Mohsanin, the lead researcher of the project.
