Bishwajit Murder

Key suspect Shakil held in Barguna

BARGUNA :: Rafiqul Islam Shakil, the prime accused in Bishwajit murder case, was arrested from his hideout in Barguna Saturday, raising the total number of the arrests in the tragic incident to 10.

A team of detectives from Dhaka arrested Shakil in Betagi by tracking his mobile phone after he fled to the coastal district adjacent to his village home in Bakerganj of Barisal to evade arrest.

Hearing the news of Shakil’s arrest, his father, Ansar Ali Khalifa, a retired employee of Patuakhali Tax Office, died of heart attack.

Nurul Islam, officer-in-charge of Bakerganj police station, who accompanied the detective team, said, “Shakil was held from the house of a relative of his cousin at Deshantorkathi village in Betagi upazila at about 5:00am.”

Shakil’s cousin, Raihan Alam, also a student of Jagannath University, was also held from their relative’s house, he added.

The OC said that both Shakil and Raihan confessed they are activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), reports Barisal correspondent.

“I chased and chopped Bishwajit but didn’t think he will die,” Shakil also confessed.

Shakil came to his village home in Bakerganj on December 11 and later took shelter at his relative’s house in Barguna, police said.

In another development, two other suspects (Rashed and Utpol ) arrested in Sylhet Friday were placed on an eight-day remand for interrogation about the barbaric incident.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court gave the order when they were produced before the court with a remand prayer.

So far, law-enforcement agencies have netted 10 suspects in the murder case after a police officer filed a case with his Sutrapur police station against 20/25 unidentified persons.

Bishwajit, 24, a shopkeeper, was hacked to death in a barbaric attack near the Victoria Park in the capital during the opposition’s roadblock on December 9.

Talking to amader barisal, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Hasan Mahmud Khandaker Saturday said all the criminals involved in killing Bishwajit will be arrested.

“Law enforcers have been asked to arrest killers. As per the instruction from the higher authority, we are launching a massive crackdown to nab the suspects in Bishawjit murder case,” he added.

Deputy Commissioner of Detective Branch (DB) of Police Monirul Islam said the youngsters, who took part in the killing mission, were identified.
