Jamaat-Shibir, BNP clash with police, AL in Pirojpur

PIROJPUR :: At least 20 people including Zianagar Police Station in-charge were injured on Sunday in clashes between police and Jamaat-Shibir men in Zianagar, native area of detained war crime suspect Mawlana Delwar Hossain Sayedee.

Witnesses and police sources said the clashes started at about 10:00am when police and AL men intercepted a procession of at least two thousand Jamaat-shibir men including a huge number of female supporters of Sayedee and BNP men at Indurkani Bazar.

Both sides engaged in clashes and AL office was ransacked leaving three AL activists injured and police failed to control the situation till 11:00am.

Clashes intensified between AL and BNP-Jamaat men when a team of police in collaboration with AL men led by Zianagar UNO and OC tried to disperse the BNP-Jamaat activists by charging baton.

The clashes left at least eight Jamaat-Shibir and 3 BNP men severely injured including 4 with gun shots.

Five police constables and 3 AL activists were also injured in the clashes.

Later, the UNO ordered that the mob be dispersed by opening fire, said OC Nasir Uddin.

Shiddhartha Shankar Kundu, UNO Zianagor Upazila, said he ordered to open fire to control the situation and save lives and properties of the people.

Hossain Mridha, alias Firoz Mridha, a Jamaat activist, who received gunshot, was sent to Khulna Medical College Hospital in a critical condition under police custody.

Jamaat-Shibir and BNP men fled the area to avoid police harassment.
