Tri-nation trio rocks Dhaka

James ConcertMusic-lovers in the city were in for a rare treat on Friday night when three rock stars from three neighbouring countries Shafqat Amanat Ali Khan (Pakistan) Sonu Nigam (India) and James (Bangladesh) came together to perform on the same stage.

Arranged by mobile phone operator Grameenphone, the ‘Tri-Nation Mega Festival’ was held at the city’s Army Stadium.

The musical festival began with a fashion show which was followed by ‘Raybeshe Nritya’, a traditional dance form, by the artistes of Shadhona, a centre for advancement of South Asian music and dance.

However, the rock-lovers were eagerly waitin for the trio to take the stage.

Around at 4:00pm, their long wait ended when Bangladeshi rock icon James, also known as Nagarbaul or Guru to his fans, appeared on the stage with his own distinctive style and set it on fire with his rocking numbers including ‘Dustu chheler dal’, ‘Pagla hawa’, ‘Liaise feeta liaise’, ‘Bijli’ and so on.

Ignoring the biting cold, the James-fans went crazy and hummed along the singer during his performance.

Pakistani singer Shafqat Amanat Ali Khan surprised the entire audience when he rendered, ‘Bhalobashi bolibo na’ his recently recorded song, composed by Alauddin Ali.

He also thanked the audience with a few Bangla sentences and later enthralled them with his songs like ‘Ankhoke sagar’, ‘Mora saiyaa’, ‘Bin tere’, ‘Tu mila’, ‘Tuhi mera’ and so on. He ended his performance with ‘Mitwa’. This was his first ever visit to Bangladesh.

With the screening of a documentary on his life, Sonu Nigam took the stage and took the audience to their feet with his popular numbers including ‘Shukrana love’, ‘Rang de’, ‘Gumsum gumsum’, ‘O soniye’, ‘Payar hua’ and others.

Sonu was the last performer of the night.
