'International-Day-of-Perso আন্তর্জাতিক ও জাতীয় প্রতিবন্ধি দিবস ২০১৩Participants of a discussion in Barisal on Tuesday called to way forward a disability inclusive development agenda and human rights for all.

The program was arranged to observe ‘International Day of Persons with Disabilities’ with the theme: “break barriers, open doors: for an inclusive society and development for all” at Social Service directorate ground in the city.

On this occasion a procession from Ashwini Kumar Hall to Social Service Directorate office followed by a discussion meeting and cultural program at the directorate office ground were organized by social service directorate in collaboration with ARDRID-CRP (Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralysed).

Mosharraf Hossain, deputy director Social Service Directorate, presided over the programme participated by different government and non-government organizations, elites of the city and representative of the persons with disabilities.

Among others Shohidul Alam, deputy commissioner, Rahima Sultana Kajal, NGO activist, Mahmudul Hassan Al Imam, Centre Manager and Physiotherapist of ARDRID-CRP centre at Barisal, Mr.Dolon, Mrs Poly, on behalf of the persons with disabilities’ addressed the discussion.

Jotishko Biswas, divisional coordinator social based rehabilitation of CRP under Integrated Disability and Livelihood Project, presented power-point discussion.

The speakers called for practical and concrete action to include disability in all aspects of development, as well as to further the participation of persons with disabilities in social life and development on the basis of equality.

They also stressed on highlight progress and obstacles in implementing disability-sensitive policies, as well as promote public awareness to break barriers and open doors for an inclusive society for all.

They said over one billion people, or approximately 15 per cent of the world’s population, live with some form of disability around the world.

In spite of this situation, disability has remained largely invisible in the mainstream development agenda and its processes, they said.

Persons with disabilities face physical, social, economic and attitudinal barriers that exclude them from participating fully and effectively as equal members of society, discussants narrated.

They are disproportionately represented among the world’s poorest, and lack equal access to basic resources, such as education, employment, healthcare and social and legal support systems, as well as have a higher rate of mortality, the discussants noticed.

The commemoration of this year’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities would provide an opportunity to further raise awareness of disability and accessibility as a cross cutting development issue and further the global efforts to promote accessibility, remove all types of barriers, and to realize the full and equal participation of persons with disabilities in society and shape the future of development for all, the participants hoped.
